Geisyr

Geysir (noto anche come il grande Geysir) è un geyser situato nella valle di Haukadalur, in Islanda. È ritenuto il più antico geyser conosciuto. La stessa parola geyser deriva da Geysir, a sua volta derivato dal verbo islandese gjósa che significa "eruttare", "emettere a fiotti". Le sue eruzioni, talvolta irregolari, spingono fiotti di acqua bollente fino ad un'altezza di 60 metri. Nel 1845 raggiunse un'altezza di 170 metri. Tra il 17 e il 20 giugno 2000, Geysir raggiunse un'altezza di 122 metri per 2 giorni: è infatti considerato come il più alto fra i geyser in attività, anche fra quelli provvisori. Geysir (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈceːisɪr̥] ( listen)), sometimes known as The Great Geysir, is a geyser in southwestern Iceland. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans.[citation needed] The English word geyser (a periodically spouting hot spring) derives from Geysir. The name Geysir itself is derived from the Icelandic verb geysa, "to gush", the verb from Old Norse. Geysir lies in the Haukadalur valley on the slopes of Laugarfjall hill, which is also the home to Strokkur geyser about 50 metres south. Eruptions at Geysir can hurl boiling water up to 70 metres in the air. However, eruptions may be infrequent, and have in the past stopped altogether for years at a time.
